There is no shortage of hair products that can help smooth frizz, add shine or make hair look fuller. But not many people can say they do all three, especially in the long term. However, a popular salon hair treatment may be the key to all of the above and then some: botulinum toxin. Don’t worry, it doesn’t involve needles.

Similar to the way wrinkles such as Xeomin or Botox Cosmetic smooth fine lines on the skin revert for a few months, hair Botox acts as a deep conditioner for semi-motorcycles, smoothing the hair and making it the same length left and right. Otherwise, the two treatments do not differ. In fact, hair botulinum toxin is actually associated with another popular treatment. “It’s very similar to the keratin treatment, except without the harsh chemicals,” explains hair stylist Cedric, owner of Cedric Salon at the Lotte New York Palace Hotel in New York City.

To learn more about this trending treatment, we got the scoop from Cedric, along with two other hair professionals. Going forward, they broke down what Botox is, who should get it and how much it costs.

What is hair botulinum toxin?
For the uninitiated, it’s not as invasive as it sounds. According to Cedric, Hair Botox “provides deep conditioning and fills in broken patches with fillers like keratin.” This process helps achieve the appearance of fuller, thicker hair.

This allows for injections inspired by the name? Just effective marketing. Cedric says, “There’s no needle.” That said, don’t panic if your appointment syringe shows up. Cedric explains, “Some brands do use fake ‘needles’ to apply products to hair, but it’s just for show.”

The name may also invoke the anti-aging properties of the treatment, according to Jessica Page, a wealthy Utah hairstylist, hair educator and lecturer. “Unlike injections in the face, hair Botox simply uses a deep conditioning treatment to repair damage and prolong the health of the hair. The treatment can reduce the effects of aging hair.” Paige said. It’s also important to note that there’s not just one type of Botox. Different formulas are available for different hair types and textures. Says Page, “The treatment you use will determine the ingredients that contribute to the health of your hair.”

What are the benefits of botulinum toxin?
Although hair Botox formulas differ, they are all similar because they infuse the hair with a host of nourishing and strengthening ingredients. Raven Hurtado, a hairstylist at Maxine Salon in Chicago, says, “This treatment contains vitamins like B5, which brings oxygen to the scalp and natural fatty acids, such as Omega-3, to enrich the hair.”

Think of it as a high-octane deep conditioner that makes hair look fuller, healthier and smoother. Says Page, “Some of the benefits can include repairing internal and external damage, repelling humidity, improving color and reducing the effects of aging hair.”

While it may sound similar to keratin treatment on paper, there are some key differences. Namely, botulinum toxin does not release formaldehyde (defined as a known carcinogen by the CDC). Hurtado says, “The difference between Botox and conventional keratin treatments is that Botox is non-chemical and is more of a conditioning treatment that revitalizes and repairs dry, dry, damaged hair and volumizes the hair to rejuvenate it.” “Keratin treatments contain more chemicals that are used to make hair smoother, more relaxed and frizz-free.”

Is hair botulinum toxin safe for all hair types?
Yes, almost everyone can benefit from hair botulinum toxin. Cedric says, “This treatment is available on all hair types and is best suited for anyone who wants more shine and less frizz.” “It’s especially good for damaged hair because it will smooth and strengthen.”

Again, the main reason some stylists (and clients) may prefer Botox over keratin treatments is the chemical makeup of the product itself. It’s also safe for pregnant clients, Hurtado says, adding, “It’s non-chemical, so you’re not breathing in fumes.”

How long does hair botulinum toxin last?
Hair botulinum toxin is semi-muscular. Hurtado says, “Depending on how often you wash your hair, it can last up to two to four months.” To help extend the life of your treatment, she also recommends using a hair mask once a week to maintain moisture and smoothness.

How much does Botox cost?
In addition to its many other benefits, hair Botox is a little cheaper than keratin treatments (which can cost up to $400). Depending on where you go, Page says, “it can range from $25 to $150, depending on which product is used.”
